blog clean up

Posted in blawging, cologne, hardware hacking on June 14th, 2010 by fabienne

after a long break in posting, fabienne.us has moved to a happy new wp hosting that i am administering myself, and has had a bit of a facelift. those of you who have followed this blog for more than a year will notice that it looks a lot like it did 2 years ago. yay for a new css of shinyness and all that!

the other big news is that i am living in cologne (germany) now full time, the 3rd annual hardhack happened and there will be even _more_ hardhacks this year as subconferences of other conferences.

i am currently helping found a fablab in cologne called Dingfabrik (a factory that makes things) which you can follow on twitter (feed in german) if you are interested.

events including hardhack 2009

Posted in conferences, hardware hacking, projects on February 25th, 2009 by fabienne

fbz hacking

lots of hardware related events are coming up. first of all i will be speaking informally at the baustel-montag this coming monday about hardhack. next up i will be speaking during re:publica about open hardware (namely licensing and historical implications of open circuit information). i will most likely attend sigint, (the ccc event not in december and not in berlin). after that comes my event, hardhack, which will be only hands-on hardware stuff, no blah blah at all. then ph-neutral which this year will include some hardhack components. and the newest addition to my roster, i will be organizing HARdware, a pre-HAR2009 event to build some really awesome interactive hardware things for attendees of HAR to play with during camp. my project will be a group of networked, interactive, and hackable couches in the slacker dome. other projects may include a huge outdoor capacitive dance interface, cotton candy representations of network traffic, and walls of networked color changing pixels. contact me (fabienne @ this website) if you want to get involved!

life has lurched into fast forward

Posted in berlin, conferences, web two oh on December 15th, 2008 by fabienne

this is just a quick post to round up a few recent activities, and a small explanation as to why my life seems to have been vorgespult (fast-forwarded). since the beginning of october i’ve joined forces with Kai v. Harbou at doctr.com. as CTO, i’m defining the tech for the company and i can’t begin to say how stoked i am (even after more than two sleep deprived months!). we are building secure and stable communication platforms for doctor to patient and doctor to doctor. i’ve been doing the web2.0 conference rounds lately, so if you’ve met me at one of those events and want to geek out further, please drop me a comment or an email. in reverse chronological order, i attended Le Web 08 in Paris, Open Everything Berlin (at which I spoke about open source hardware, slides here [pdf]), Medizin2Null (helped organize via doctr.com, videos here), LateCrunch, Girl Geek Dinner Berlin, Barcamp Berlin 3, and the Pre-Web 2.0 Expo Europe Drinkup.

and if you thought i was going to stop, haha good luck. this week kicks off a long series of houseguests international flatmates. for what comes between christmas and new year’s each year? oh yes. it’s chaos communication congress time. this will be my fifth congress in a row. i won’t be presenting or running any workshops, but i may be around lending a soldering iron or multimeter as a hardware hacking enabler. if this year’s ccc is anything like last year’s month-o’-hardware shenanigans, i’m up for a very hacktastic time:

i’m already planning some crazy projects for next summer’s har2009 .nl hacker camp as well as finding a location/date for my own event here in berlin: hardhack (site down at the moment, some documention here). so stay tuned and i’ll try keep my blog more closely synced with my real-time life.

post hardhack

Posted in berlin, conferences, hardware hacking on April 21st, 2008 by fabienne

pile of parts

thank you to everyone who came to hardhack, it was a lot of fun. the solder fumes were pervasive! for once i wasn’t the only one who was completely and utterly obsessed with circuits *smile*. so thank you one and all, i really had a blast watching people help each other and get inspired to try something new in the way of hardware. if you document all or part of a project online which you showed me at hardhack, don’t forget to email about it. my photos of the event are here. thanks again for participating if you were there.

hardhack has a schedule

Posted in berlin, conferences, hardware hacking on April 6th, 2008 by fabienne

msoft

there is a preliminary schedule up for hardhack, things may change a little bit, and a few more workshops may be added, but at least it’s a start. *smile* sign up for hardhack if you are into soldering or hardware or just want to sniff some solder fumes in berlin. [pictured above: marc's antenna mod for what i think is an rfid device which he showed me at cansecwest last week.]
